Poets split in Day 2 of Gargoyle Classic; Beat Loras in five

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Whittier College volleyball team ended Day 2 of the Gargoyle Classic with two five game matches. They lost to Central (Iowa) but then pulled out a big win against Loras to conclude the tournament.
Game 1 - Central (Iowa) L 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 16-18
Poets started the day off a little slow but were able to keep the match close as they dropped the first two games but were able to come back in the third and fourth thanks to Alyssa Sialaris who had a game high 26 kills to force a fifth and deciding game. In that final game, the Poets had chances and sophomore Alayna Rigo chipped in with five of her 19 kills and freshman Katie Heard played big up front as she totaled eight kills but it wasn't enough as the Poets were unable to come away with the "W".
Alessandra Rios had yet another strong assist day as she totaled 53, while Adriana Moore tallied double digit digs with 10.
Game 2 – Loras W 25-16, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12
The purple and gold saw themselves in yet another battle as they again went back and forth in points and games. They clinched the first game 25-16 but then lost in nail biters in the second and third games 27-25 and 25-23 despite the strong play of Rigo and Sialaris who paced the Poets with 25 and 24 kills, each,respectively. The Poets again rallied back to win game four behind strong setting by Rios who collected her second double double of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. They were then able to get up quickly in the fifth game thanks to some strong defense from Moore who had 13 digs to preserve their third overall win of the season.
Poets return to action as they travel to take on the Athenas of Claremont-M-S Tuesday, September 27 beginning at 7:30pm.
