Poets clinch No. 1 Seed in SCIAC Championships with 13-6 win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team clinched the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships following a 13-6 win over Chapman University.

The Purple & Gold remain undefeated in SCIAC play as they move to 7-0 and 16-14 on the season.  They have also won six in a row and have now clinched the No. 1 seed for the Championships for the second consecutive season. 

Whittier held a one goal advantage after the first quarter of play at 3-2 with connections coming from Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.), Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.), and Arlin De La Mora (Commerce, Calif.).  They opened the game up in the second stanza adding another five moving the score to 8-3.  All five goals coming from different players (Morales, Kendyl Riley (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.), De La Mora, Hannah Ellett (Merced, Calif.)).  The first two tallies in the third quarter came from De La Mora and Gorrocino that pushed the deficit to seven and the Poets didn't look back as they added a couple insurance goals in the final eight minutes from Morales and De La Mora that secured the win. 

Morales and De La Mora each finished with three goals, while Gorrocino picked up two.      

Whittier wraps up their regular season tomorrow, Saturday, April 15 as they travel to take on Occidental College beginning at 11:00am.
