Callaway headed back to NCAA D-III Championships

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Michele Callaway is heading back to the NCAA Division III Championships as she led the Whittier College women's cross country team to a ninth place finish at the West Regional Meet. The men battled through illnesses and injuries to place 15th in the region.

Callaway saved her best performance of the year for the regional meet. She ran a 22:27.8 to place fifth and earned All-West Region honors for the second straight year. Callaway was only 20 seconds behind Pomona-Pitzer's Alicia Freese who finished first. It was the closest Callaway came to the Sagehen all year.

Sophomore Molly Litherland and freshman Christine Verduzco just missed out on the top 35 which would have earned them all-region honors as they finished 36th and 38th, respectively.

All-conference runner Candace Wray came in 51st place while freshman Lupe Ulloa placed 66th to round out the top five for the Poets. Senior Darlene Partida concluded her Poet career with a 69th place finish.

On the men's side, sophomore Juan Bustos was the top finisher with a 79th place finish.
