Lance Franey has just been moved into the role as the Associate Athletic Director for Communications at Whittier College in Los Angeles, Calif.
Franey is responsible for all strategic communications for Whittier College’s 22 athletic programs, including directing all media, public relations and social networking efforts. In addition to managing the department's official website (wcpoets.com), he oversees all video coverage, licensing, marketing, and branding and serves as the Director of Golf, Head Women's Golf Coach, and the Assistant Men’s & Women’s Tennis Coach.
Franey helped introduce four social media outlets for the Poets, including Whittier College’s presence on both Twitter (Twitter.com/wcpoets) (Twitter.com/thewcsn), Facebook (Facebook.com/wcpoets) (Facebook.com/thewcsn) and Instagram (Instragram.com/thewcsn), as well as the YouTube channel (The Whittier College Sports Network). In 2011, he debuted/created the Whittier College Sports Network, which includes live video streaming with play-by-play commentary via Stretch Internet for all Whittier home games.
A native of San Diego, Calif., he graduated from Whittier College in 2009 with a degree in Child Development with an emphasis on Developmental Disorders before earning his M.A. in Education in 2011. While at Whittier as an undergraduate he played on the Men’s Tennis team, while working inside of the Sports Information office and then moved into a role as an Assistant Sports Information Director from 2009-2011.
Prior to attending Whittier he attended Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif. where he played on the Men’s Tennis team for two years, while earning an AA Degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Criminal Law.
His playing career included being named a two time captain at Southwestern, 1st Team All-PCC in both singles and doubles his freshman and sophomore year, while earning back-to-back trips to the Ojai Championships. After transferring to Whittier, Franey came in and helped rejuvenate a program, which currently holds the best record in Whittier College Men’s Tennis history, while being named captain twice and earning trips to the Ojai Championships his junior and senior year.
Franey is a member of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and National Association of DIII Athletic Administrators. He has served on the CoSIDA Convention Programming Committee since 2014, the CoSIDA Writing Contest Committee since 2013 and looks to join the CoSIDA Programming Committee for Health and Wellness next year.
