Late Goal Pushes La Verne Past Poets, Leopards Score in the 87th minute

Joe McFarlin '07 scored in the 60th minute to tie the game at two, but Whittier College gave up a late goal to the University of La Verne and lost 3-2 on October 11.  The Poets are now 2-9 overall and 0-8 in SCIAC play while La Verne improved their record to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the SCIAC.

La Verne jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the 17th minute.  Ben Stockler '07 tied the game at one on a penalty kick in the 37th minute.  The score remained 1-1 into halftime.  The Leopards took the lead again in the 59th minute just to have the Poets even the score less than a minute later on McFarlin's header that found the back of the net.  Mike Kosak '10 got credit for the assist on the goal.  The score remained 2-2 for most of the second half as the game picked up in intensity.  Seven yellow cards were issued and there were 25 fouls in the game.    The tie was broken in the 87th minute when the Leopards slipped one past Cody Sowa '10 and the Poet defense to steal the 3-2 victory.  Sowa made two saves in the game as the Poets were out shot 11-6.  La Verne also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
