Football Beat by SCIAC Rival, Poets Now 0-2 in Conference

Whittier College lost 35-10 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival, California Lutheran University at Memorial Stadium on October 7.  The Poets are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC play while the Kingsmen remain undefeated at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SCIAC.

Josh Scurlock '08 accounted for 200 of the Poets' 258 yards of total offense.  He gained 49 yards with a touchdown on the ground and was 12 for 23 with 151 yards and two interceptions in the air.  Three receivers made four receptions for the Poets.  Albert Williams '08 gained 92 yards,  Anthony Pomponio '09 finished with 40 receiving yards and Kevin Cullina '08 had 35 yards.

Tommy Terhune '07 led the defense with eight tackles.  Donovan Maloney '09, Josh Toailoa '07 and Ruben Chavez '07 each had a sack.  Chasen Eddow '08 intercepted a pass for the Poets.

Cal Lutheran jumped out to a 20-0 lead with two touchdown passes in the first quarter and one in the second.  The Poets got on the scoreboard with a 26-yard field goal by Ben Walker '08 with 9:09 left in the third quarter.  The Kingsmen made the score 26-3 with a six-yard touchdown run five minutes later.  The Poets blocked their second extra point of the night on the ensuing attempt.  Scurlock leaped over the Kingsmen defense for a ten-yard touchdown run with 2:00 left in the third to make the score 26-10.  In the fourth quarter, Cal Lutheran scored on a 46-yard touchdown pass and added a 22-yard field goal with 1:25 remaining to take the 35-10 victory.

The Poets are at home again next week for a non-conference game against Chapman University on October 14 at 7pm.
