Whittier College was shut out 6-0 by undefeated Chapman
University in a non-conference game at Donald E. Graham Soccer
Field on September 6.
Cody Sawa '10 and Michael Read
'10, both seeing their first collegiate action, combined
to make five saves in goal for the Poets (0-1). Chapman scored
three goals in each half to improve their record to 3-0.
The Panthers started the scoring in the 17th minute with a
one-time volley off a cross that left Sawa with no chance to make
the save. Ten minutes later, Chapman struck again, this time
with a through-ball that left Sawa one-on-one with a Chapman
forward. The Panthers added one more before the break,
leaving them with a 3-0 lead.
Half number two brought much of the same misfortune for the Poets,
as Chapman scored with a header on a free kick in the 51st
minute. A defensive miscue by Whittier gave their opponents
an easy goal in the 59th minute. Chapman put on the finishing
touches with a penalty kick goal in the 61st minute to make the
score 6-0.
The Poets look to rebound as they take on La Sierra University on
the road, September 8th.
