Whittier College men's soccer wrapped up its season and said
farewell to its seniors with a SCIAC contest against the University
of La Verne at home on October 29. The game was tied at one
very early on, but the Leopards scored three straight to take the
4-1 win over the Poets.
The game started with the recognition of seniors Simon
Ghebru and Kody Seminara and a tribute to
Eddie Baker '10 who suffered a horrific leg injury
in the Poets previous game. Ghebru is a four-year
letter-winner for the Poets and Seminara is the captain of the team
and has been a leader of the defense for three seasons.
La Verne started the scoring in the first minute of the game, when
a defensive miscue by the Poets left the goal wide open for a
tap-in goal by Beto Valle. The Poets bounced back, however,
with a goal of their own just two minutes later by Simon
Ghebru '08. Rhye-Samuel Kanassetega '11 struck a
perfect corner kick that found Ghebru for a header that found the
back of the net, giving the senior a goal in his final game as a
Poet. In the 25th minute, La Verne was awarded a
penalty kick and Fransisco Escobedo gave the Leopards the 2-1 lead
that would be the halftime score.
La Verne got some insurance in the second half, scoring in the
65th minute and 81st minute to take home the
4-1 victory. The Poets out shot La Verne 13-10 and took three
corner kicks.
The Poets end their season with a 2-15-1 overall record and 2-11-1
SCIAC record.
