The Whittier College men's soccer team got a game-tying goal
from DJ Covarrubias '11 midway through the first
half, but SCIAC rival Occidental College came back with three
unanswered goals to take the 4-1 victory in Los Angeles, Calif., on
October 3. The Poets fall to 1-8-1 overall and 1-5-1 in
conference play.
Occidental got the scoring started in the 18th minute,
when Ben Waters scored the first of his three goals on the
day. Covarrubias scored the equalizer in the 24th
minute for the Poets. It looked as if the first half would
come to a close with a 1-1 score line, but twenty seconds before
the halftime whistle, Aaron Mun scored what would prove to be the
game-winning goal for the Tigers. Occidental took 15 shots in
the first half. The Poets took just three shots, but all
three were on goal.
In the second half, the score remained 2-1 until the
79th minute when Waters collected a rebound off the post
and buried it in the back of the net for his second of the
day. He completed the hat trick in the 88th
minute, this time using his head to redirect a corner kick from
David Rosenberg, making the final score 4-1. Whittier
goalkeeper, Paul Stepler-Camp '10 made four saves
in the game. He faced 24 shots from the Tiger offense.
The Poets are at home for their next contest against
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on October 5. The SCIAC game is
scheduled to kick-off at 11am.
