Whittier College was outscored 35-0 in the first half on their
way to a 59-6 loss to SCIAC rival University of Redlands on
November 3 in Redlands, Calif. The loss drops the Poets
record to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Josh Scurlock '08 was responsible for the lone
Poet touchdown with a two-yard touchdown run in the third
quarter. He carried the ball nine times for 30 yards.
He finished 18-for-34 with 197 yards passing, but threw three
interceptions. Shawn Briggs '08 caught six
passes for 95 yards. Anthony Pomponio '09
also had six receptions, accounting for 51 yards.
Defensively, the Poets were led by Jared Izidoro
'08 who had eight tackles, two for a loss.
Anthony Capelletti '09, Daniel Lopez '08 and
Ryan Kirkpatrick '11 each recorded a
sack.
Redlands quarterback Dan Selway had a monster day with 391 yards on
23-for-32 passing and four touchdowns. He completed passes to
twelve different receivers including eight to Kyle Godfrey for 69
yards. Jake Lacey had a team-high 89 receiving yards on just
three receptions. Running back Zack Schaffer carried the ball
13 times and gained 123 yards with a touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs got six tackles and
an interception from Conor Drake. Tam Berhe was credited with
two sacks. Brad Smith, Nick Graves and Mike Nicolini each had
interceptions.
The Poets wrap up their season on November 10, when SCIAC
powerhouse Occidental comes Memorial Stadium. The game is
scheduled to kick-off at 7pm.
