Men's Basketball Falls to Pomona, Fanning '07 Scores Team-High 14 Points

Tim Fanning '07 led the Poets with a team-high 14 points, but Whittier College lost 80-68 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at Graham Athletics Center on February 14. 

Fanning hit a pair of three's and was 4-for-8 from the field in 31 minutes of action.  Marcus Gibson '09 and Vernon Covington '08 pitched in 12 points apiece and A.J. Manalo '10 finished with eleven points with three buckets from behind the arc in six minutes of play off the bench.

Both teams shot exceptionally well from the field in the first half with Whittier (9-13, 3-8 SCIAC) shooting nearly 58 percent and Pomona (13-8, 7-4) making 54 percent of its shots.  The halftime edge went to the Sagehens by a score of 48-44.  The teams cooled off after the break, but Pomona gradually extended its lead as the half progressed.  The Poets were out rebounded in the game 42-26 and turned the ball over 15 times.  Solid free throw shooting in the second half by Pomona (10-for-14) kept the game out of the reach of the Poets.
