Men's Basketball Suffers Overtime Loss to Redlands, Fanning '07 Hits Eight Three's in Loss

Tim Fanning '07 scored a team-high 34 points including eight three-pointers, but Whittier College lost 136-129 in overtime to the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif. on February 19.  The Poets are now 9-15 overall and 3-10 in conference play.

Fanning also had five rebounds, five assists and two steals in the game.  Vernon Covington '08 finished with a double-double, scoring 25 points and pulling down ten rebounds.  Jeff McLean '09 also had a double-double with 19 points and eleven boards.  Marcus Gibson '09 added 19 points, six rebounds and a team-high three steals.  Raphael Farlough '08 scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds.

There were six lead changes and five ties in the first half.  The largest lead for either team was eight points held by Redlands (16-7, 9-4) at the 12:18 mark in the opening half.  The Poets shot 62.5 percent from the field in the half, but still trailed 52-50 at the break.  After seven more ties in the beginning of the second half, the Bulldogs were able to jump out to a ten point lead with just under nine minutes left in regulation.  With one minute left and the Poets down by four points, Fanning hit a three to cut the lead to 113-112.  After Redlands failed to convert on their next possession, Fanning hit another three with nine seconds left to give the Poets a two-point lead.  On the ensuing Bulldog possession, they were able to score with a lay-up to send the game into overtime tied at 115.  Redlands scored 21 points in the five-minute overtime period while the Poets managed just 14 and Redlands won by the final score of 136-129.
