Men's Basketball Loses to La Verne, Four Poet Score in Double Figures

Tim Fanning '07 hit six three-pointers for a game-high 18 points, but Whittier College lost 67-63 to the University of La Verne in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at Graham Athletics Center on February 7.  The Poets are now 8-12 overall and 2-7 in the SCIAC.

Jeff McLean '09 picked up his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Seven of his rebounds came on the offensive end and he also finished with five assists, three steals and two blocks.  Donovan White '10 was 5-for-9 from the field and scored 12 points.  Vernon Covington '08 added eleven points and seven rebounds.

The first half saw six lead changes with the largest lead for either team the 36-27 advantage the Leopards (4-16, 3-6 SCIAC) held at the half.  La Verne was on fire in the first half, shooting nearly 58 percent from the field, while the Poets shot 33 percent.  After being down eleven early in the second half, the Poets cut the lead to one with 8:33 remaining in the game.  That would be as close as they would get.  The Poets forced 23 turnovers in the game, but were unable to finish on the offensive end, shooting 36 percent from the field in the game.  The Leopards held a 41-31 edge on the glass and shot 50 percent from the field.
