Softball Splits Doubleheader with Occidental, Ovieda '09 has Three RBI in Game One Win

Vicky Ovieda '09 hit a three-run double to catapult Whittier College to a 6-2 win in game one of a SCIAC doubleheader at Occidental College on March 18.  The Poets (15-7, 7-3) lost the nightcap 5-4 to the Tigers (2-22, 2-10).

Deena Arenas '08 went 2-for-3 with a run batted in game one.  Mary Pacheco '10 and Amanda Carrasco '10 each drove in and scored a run.  Brenna Winslow '07 went 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Amanda Brown '09 stole her eighth base of the season and scored a run.  Arenas (6-4) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits and struck out four batters.

Carrasco's RBI single and Ovieda's three-run double got the Poets off to a quick start in the top of the first.  Pacheco drove in Brown in the second to give Whittier a 5-0 lead.  Three Occidental singles in the bottom of the second cut the Poet lead to three.  The Poets would answer back with another run in the top of the third and never look back.  Pitching took over in the rest of the game as neither team was able to manufacture a run.  The final score was 6-2 in favor of the Poets.

In game two, Pacheco went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  She leads the Poets with 30 RBI.  Winslow finished with an RBI and a run scored.  Carrasco had a double and an RBI.  Brown and Sheryl Fukuda '08 each scored a run.  Ovieda (9-2) pitched six innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks.  She also struck out two batters in the loss.

Occidental got on the scoreboard first with two runs in their first at-bats.  They added three runs in the third inning to put Whittier in a 5-0 hole.  The Poets cut into the lead in the fourth inning, when Carrasco drove in Pacheco on a fielder's choice.  An error on the play allowed Winslow to come home to make the score 5-2.  With the same score in the top of the seventh, the Poets scored on a Pacheco RBI single.  Once again, a Tiger throwing error brought home another run to make the score 5-4.  The Poets left Pacheco at third base to end the game.
