Whittier College committed ten errors, seven in game two, as
they were swept in a road doubleheader with conference foe
University of La Verne on March 24. The Poets (15-9,
7-5 SCIAC) lost 7-3 in game one. In game two, La Verne
(12-12, 8-4) handed Whittier a 10-2 loss; the Poets' largest margin
of defeat this season.
The losses marked the first time the Poets were swept in a
doubleheader since February 10 against Menlo. The Poets'
current losing streak of three games is their longest this season.
In game one, Brenna Winslow '07 led the Poets
at the dish, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run
scored. Mary Pacheco '10 went 2-for-4 with a
pair of doubles and a run scored. Amanda Carrasco
'10 drove in a run and Sheryl Fukuda '08
scored a run. Deena Arenas '08 (6-5) pitched
all six innings for the Poets and gave up six earned runs on twelve
hits and two walks in the loss.
Whittier jumped out in front early, scoring two runs thanks to an
error and a bases loaded walk in the first inning. La Verne
cut the lead to one with a run in the bottom half of the
inning. Winslow's RBI single in the fourth made the score
3-1, but the Leopards would mount a comeback. In the bottom
of the fourth, two Poet errors and four La Verne hits led to six
runs and an insurmountable 7-3 lead.
In the nightcap, Pacheco collected two more hits, including her
team-leading 14th double, an RBI and a run scored. She also
leads Whittier in batting average (.540), hits (47), total bases
(72) and runs batted in (31). Winslow drove in her 25th run
of the season and Amanda Brown '09 walked twice
and scored a run. Vicky Ovieda '09 (9-3) was
credited with the loss after giving up seven earned runs on twelve
hits and two walks in four and one-third innings.
Once again, the Poets were on the scoreboard first after Pacheco
doubled and Winslow singled to bring her home. That was the
only lead the Poets would hold, however, as the Leopards went on to
score eight runs in the first four innings. Pacheco's RBI
single in the top half of the fifth brought home Brown, but that
wasn't enough. La
