Softball Lose Both at Redlands, Poets Back to .500 in SCIAC

Amanda Carrasco '10 went 3-for-6 with a double and an RBI, but Whittier College lost both ends of a doubleheader at the University of Redlands in SCIAC play on April 22.  The Poets (21-15, 10-10) lost game one 8-2 and fell in the nightcap, 9-1.

Mary Pacheco '10 led the Poets in game one, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.  Erica Ureno '08 hit a solo home run (4) and walked.  Carrasco went 1-for-4 in the game.  Deena Arenas '08 (9-9) was credited with the loss after giving up eight runs, five earned, on eleven hits and two walks in six innings pitched.

Redlands scored one run in their first at-bats after a walk and a double.  The Poets answered back in the next inning, when Pacheco drew a bases loaded walk to tie the score at one.  Redlands received all the run support they would need in the fourth inning with three runs to take a 4-1 lead.  They would add four more in the sixth inning.  Ureno hit a solo blast to left-center field in the seventh, but that was the only offense the Poets could provide for a comeback.

In game two, Carrasco came up with two of the Poets' three hits, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.  Winslow provided the other hit, and scored a run.  Vicky Ovieda '09 (12-7) pitched 4 and two-thirds innings and allowed eight earned runs on nine hits and five walks in the loss.

The Poets fell behind early once again, with the Bulldogs scoring twice in the opening frame.  They would add another run in the bottom of the third.  The Poets got on the board in the fourth when Carrasco singled home Winslow.  Redlands tacked on six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game with a 9-1 score after the eight-run mercy rule.
