College to a 8-6 game two victory in a doubleheader with California
Lutheran University at Palmer Softball Stadium on April 28.
The Poets (23-17, 12-12) lost game one, 12-2.
The Poets' 23 wins this season are the most for any Poet
softball team since 1987 when they finished 26-11. The Poets
have not won 20 games in a season since 1990. The most
victories in a season for the program is 30 in 1986.
In the opening game of the conference doubleheader, the Poet
offense only provided four hits. Beth Walczak '10 provided
two hits, going 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. Charis
Gaston '09 and Brown each were credited with RBI. Deena
Arenas '08 (9-10) pitched four and one-third innings, giving up
eight runs on seven hits and five walks in the loss.
Cal Lutheran scored one in the top of the second inning to take
the early lead. The Poets tied the score in the bottom half
of the inning when Brown drew a bases loaded walk to bring home a
run. The Regals found their stride offensively in the fourth
and fifth innings, as they scored four and seven runs,
respectively, to go up 12-1. The Poets scored just one in the
bottom of the fifth, ending the game 12-2 after the eight-run mercy
rule.
Game two was a different story for the Poets. Brown went
3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Gaston and Sheryl Fukuda '08 each
went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Fukuda also
doubled. Mary Pacheco '10 hit a two-run double and Vicky
Ovieda '09 went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. She also earned
her 14th win of the season, pitching all seven innings and giving
up just one earned run on three hits and five walks. The
Poets committed five errors resulting in five unearned runs.
The Regals began the game with one run in the opening
stanza. The Poets got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
second, scoring three runs on an RBI single from Gaston and a
two-run double from Pacheco. Cal Lutheran made the score 3-2
with another run in the top of the third and then took over the
lead with three runs in the fifth inning. The Poets came back
with a big fifth inning of their own, using five hits and a walk to
score five runs and take an 8-5 lead. The Regals scored one
in the top of the seventh to make the final score 8-6.
