Men's Soccer Hangs Tough with #22 Redlands

Whittier College men's soccer faced off with defending SCIAC Champion, nationally ranked #22 University of Redlands on September 19.  In a hard fought, defensive battle, the Bulldogs prevailed with a second half goal to take the 1-0 victory at Graham Soccer Field.  The loss drops the Poets record to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in SCIAC play.

The Poets shocked Redlands (4-2, 2-1) with its intensity in the opening minutes of the game.  The Bulldogs had a number of chances early on, as they took six shots in the opening frame.  Their attempts were thwarted by the Poets defense, including a shot that was cleared off the line by Kody Seminara '08 late in the first half.  The Bulldogs out shot Whittier 10-4 in the game.  The lone goal of the game came in the 48th minute.  After a free kick was awarded just outside the penalty area, Bryan Fakkema sent a cross into the box that found the head of Ross Schunk and beat Whittier goalkeeper, Paul Stepler-Camp '10.  Stepler-Camp made four saves in the game.

The Poets had a number of second half opportunities on free kicks and two second half corners, but were unable to tie the score.  Whittier's next game is on September 22, when they host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.  Kickoff for the SCIAC game is scheduled for 11am.
