Whittier College men's soccer faced off with defending SCIAC
Champion, nationally ranked #22 University of Redlands on September
19. In a hard fought, defensive battle, the Bulldogs
prevailed with a second half goal to take the 1-0 victory at Graham
Soccer Field. The loss drops the Poets record to 0-6 overall
and 0-3 in SCIAC play.
The Poets shocked Redlands (4-2, 2-1) with its intensity in the
opening minutes of the game. The Bulldogs had a number of
chances early on, as they took six shots in the opening
frame. Their attempts were thwarted by the Poets defense,
including a shot that was cleared off the line by Kody
Seminara '08 late in the first half. The Bulldogs
out shot Whittier 10-4 in the game. The lone goal of the game
came in the 48th minute. After a free kick was
awarded just outside the penalty area, Bryan Fakkema sent a cross
into the box that found the head of Ross Schunk and beat Whittier
goalkeeper, Paul Stepler-Camp '10.
Stepler-Camp made four saves in the game.
The Poets had a number of second half opportunities on free kicks
and two second half corners, but were unable to tie the
score. Whittier's next game is on September 22, when they
host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Kickoff for the SCIAC game is
scheduled for 11am.
