Edward Baker '10 scored a late second half goal
to tie the game as Whittier College finished in a 2-2 tie with
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges at Donald E. Graham Soccer Field on
September 22. Last season, Pomona outscored Whittier 10-2 in
two games. The Poets are now 0-6-1 overall and 0-3-1 in SCIAC
play.
After a night of heavy rain and even more showers during the
contest, the Poets had to come from behind twice on a slick field
to earn the tie. Pomona started the scoring in the
22nd minute, when a cross slipped through the hands of
Whittier goalkeeper Paul Stepler-Camp '10 and
landed at the feet of Andrew Stamm for an easy tap in. As the
half came to a close and the rain began to fall again, the Poets
tied things up in the 38th minute. Simon
Ghebru '08 scored on a cross from Chris Garror
'11 to make the score 1-1 at halftime.
The Sagehens took the lead for a second time in the 72nd
minute, when Kyle Hill got past the Whittier defense and found the
back of the net on a break away. It wasn't until the
88th minute that Baker scored the game's final goal,
after Nnadozie Nwokeabia '09 used a great
individual effort to send a cross into the box that was headed down
by Justin DeLong '10 and onto Baker's
foot.
The sudden death overtime periods saw no goals, and the game ended
in the 2-2 tie. Stepler-Camp made eight saves for the Poets,
four in the overtime periods. The two teams combined for 51
fouls and six yellow cards in a physical game. The Poets took
seven shots in the game, three of those were on goal. The
Sagehens took 19 shots.
The Poets are in action again on September 26, when they continue
conference play against the California Institute of
Technology. The game is scheduled to begin at 4pm in
Pasadena, Calif.
