Jeff McLean '09 scored a game-high 13 points, but Whittier
College lost 62-59 to SCIAC rival University of Redlands in
Redlands, Calif., on January 23. Since the Poets' January 12
win over Cal Lutheran, Whittier has dropped its last three SCIAC
games as their record falls to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in conference
play.
McLean finished with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 23
minutes of action off the bench. The only other Poet in
double figures was Vernon Covington '08 with ten points. He
also pulled down seven rebounds. The Poets struggled from the
field, shooting just 36%. They were just 3-for-14 from beyond
the arc. During their three-game losing streak, Whittier has
shot 34% from the field as a team.
Redlands (7-8, 2-2) was led by Matt Dietrich who posted a
double-double with eleven points and twelve rebounds. Dave
Thomas led the Bulldogs with twelve points. Dan Selway and
Daniel Markus finished with eleven points apiece. The
Bulldogs were only slightly better from the field at almost 40%,
and for a team that for many years thrived on the three-point shot,
went just 2-for-9 from long distance. They held a 47-37
advantage on the glass and a 34-28 edge in points in the paint.
The Poets look to end their losing streak on January 26, when they
return home to face conference co-leaders, Pomona-Pitzer.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm in the Graham Athletics Center.
