Whittier College Volleyball lost three matches last week, all in
conference play. The Poets were swept by Pomona-Pitzer on
October 21, followed by three-set losses to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
on October 24 and California Lutheran on October 25. Whittier
is now 4-18 overall and 1-9 in SCIAC play.
The Poets lost 25-17, 25-19, 25-14 to Pomona (16-7, 5-3).
Whittier was led by Sara Araiza '12 with four kills, 12 digs and
nine assists. Frankie Marshall '12 also pitched in with four
kills. Justine Martinez '12 had eight digs. Shannon
Orlins '11 was credited with a match-high three service aces.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (17-9, 7-2) handed the Poets their second
loss of the week 25-9, 25-14, 25-12. Araiza and Marshall each
tallied three kills and five digs. Araiza also pitched in
with eight assists. Michelle Gayhart '12 and Jennifer Salas
'10 also had five digs apiece.
The Poets finished their week with a 3-0 loss (25-14, 25-10, 25-20)
to Cal Lutheran (18-6, 7-2). Marshall led the way once again
with five kills. Gayhart and Melissa Johnson '10 finished
with four kills each. Salas led the defense with 11
digs. Araiza finished with nine digs and 16 assists.
The Poets travel to the University of Redlands on October 28.
The SCIAC match-up is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
