Whittier College Volleyball took leads in both their matches
this weekend, but ended up with a pair of losses to the University
of Redlands on October 3 and Occidental College on October 4.
The Poets lost 3-2 to Redlands and 3-1 to Occidental, both in the
Graham Athletics Center, to drop their record to 2-15 overall and
0-6 in SCIAC play.
The Poets took the first two sets of their match against
Redlands. They cruised to a 25-17 win in the first set
followed by a 25-22 battle in the second. After committing
just four attacking errors in the first two sets, Whittier caught
the error bug in the final three sets with 13 and Redlands took
advantage. The Bulldogs won the third and fourth 25-19 and
25-15 before winning a tight fifth set 15-11.
Keisha O'Brien '10 continued to collect kills for the Poets,
putting up a match-high 25 kills. She also led the Poet
defense with 24 digs and two solo blocks. Frankie Marshall
'12 was the only other Poet with double-digit kills with
eleven. Victoria Larios '11 was credited with 15 digs.
Brittni Woodward '12 finished with 11 digs and Sara Araiza '12 was
credited with 13 digs and 42 assists. Jennifer Salas '10 led
all players with four service aces.
The Poets suffered a similar fate the following night against
Occidental. After taking the first set 25-15, Whittier
struggled in the next three. Occidental capitalized on ten
Poet service errors and five blocking errors to win 25-19, 25-17,
25-18 in the final three sets.
O'Brien had another strong performance for the Poets with 18 kills
and 22 digs. Marshall finished with nine kills and ten
digs. Araiza had 16 digs and 28 assists and Justine Martinez
'12 pitched in with 15 digs.
The Poets travel to #3 University of La Verne for their next match
on October 7. The SCIAC contest is scheduled to begin at
7:30pm.
