Whittier College Men's Soccer wrapped up the 2008 season with a
win and a loss in SCIAC play. The Poets beat visiting Caltech
3-1 on October 29 and then lost a tight battle with visiting La
Verne 1-0 on November 1. The Poets finish the season with a
3-15 record overall and 2-12 record in conference play.
In the win over Caltech, the Poets dominated play for the majority
of the game. Whittier took a lead late in the first half when
a Joey Gelaro '10 pass found Eddie Baker '10 inside the six-yard
box for a tap-in goal. Whittier out shot the Beavers 6-3 in
the first half.
In the second half, Baker struck again to extend the Poets lead in
the 65th minute, this time on the receiving end of a
pass from Rhye-Samuel Kanassatega '11. Patricio Carregha '12
added an insurance goal five minutes later with Gelaro getting
credit for his second assist of the game. Caltech put an end
to Whittier's clean sheet with a goal in the 86th
minute.
Poet goalkeeper, Micheal Read '10 made four saves for the
Poets. His counterpart made nine saves for the Beavers as the
Poets ended up with a 13-7 advantage in shots.
On senior day at Graham Soccer Field against La Verne, the two
teams were entrenched in a physical, defensive battle from the
start. Despite getting out shot 17-6 in the game, the Poets
stayed in the game with timely defensive stops and eight saves from
Read in goal. The Leopards broke through in the
82nd minute however, as a high-bouncing ball towards the
Whittier net was headed over the outstretched arms of Read and into
the net. The Poets fought to create opportunities in the
closing minutes, but were unable to find the equalizer.
The 2008 SCIAC Men's Soccer Tournament will take place on
November 6 at the University of Redlands. Top-seed Redlands
hosts #4 Claremont and #2 La Verne takes on #3 Pomona in the first
round. The Poets finished seventh in the SCIAC standings.
