Whittier College split a doubleheader with California Lutheran
University on February 16 as both teams opened up conference
play. The Regals took game one in five innings by a score of
11-0, but the Poets bounced back in game two with a 10-1
victory. Whittier is now 5-3 overall and Cal Lutheran is
2-2.
In game one, Mary Pacheco '10 was the only Poet to record a base
hit. Cal Lutheran started off with two runs in the first
inning, followed by a big, five-run second inning. They
closed the game with four more in the bottom of the fourth.
Lizzy Chacon (2-0) got the win for Cal Lutheran, allowing just one
hit with four strike outs in five innings. Deena Arenas '08
(1-3) was credited with the loss for the Poets.
Game two was a different story for the Poet offense. Pacheco
led the way going 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBI. Sheryl
Fukuda '08 went 1-for-1 with two RBI, a walk and two runs
scored. Kellie Canida '11 was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run
scored. Vicky Ovieda '09 was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs
scored. Amanda Brown '09 had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run
scored. Dyan Acevedo '09 finished with an RBI-double and two
runs scored. Molly Yriate '11 also had two hits and an
RBI. Heather Dady '11 (3-0) pitched a complete game and
allowed just one unearned run on nine hits.
The Poets continue SCAIC play on February 23, when they travel to
Occidental College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at
12:00pm.
