Whittier College softball played a pair of non-conference
doubleheaders on the road March 1 and 2. The lost both games
to Hope International (10-3, 8-2) on Saturday, but bounced back
with a pair of wins at La Sierra University (8-5, 12-1) the
following day.
Only three Poets recorded hits in the game one loss to Hope
International. Mary Pacheco '10 went 2-for-3 with a solo home
run and two runs scored. Vicky Ovieda '09 also went 2-for-3
with a double and an RBI. Amanda Brown '09 was 2-for-4 on the
day. Amanda Carrasco '10 drove in a run with a sacrifice
fly. Deena Arenas '08 (1-4) was the losing pitcher in the
game.
Whittier had just six hits in the nightcap as well. Brown had
two of those hits, stole a base and scored a run. Dyan
Acevedo '09 recorded an RBI with a sacrifice fly. Heather
Dady '11 (3-1) was credited with her first loss of the season as
the Poets' starter.
The trip to La Sierra faired much better for the Poet
offense. In game one's 8-5 victory, they finished with twelve
hits. Brown led the way once again, going 3-for-5 at the
plate with three doubles, two RBI and a run scored. Pacheco
went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one RBI, one stolen base and
two runs scored. Kellie Canida '11 drove in a pair of runs
and scored another. Ovieda went 2-for-4 with a run
scored. Carrasco hit a sacrifice fly that drove in one run,
and also walked and scored a run. Arenas (2-4) pitched a
complete game, scattering ten hits and allowing three earned runs
in seven innings to earn the win.
The offense stayed hot in game two with twelve more hits on their
way to the 12-1 win in five innings. Molly Yriate '11 led the
charge with a 3-for-3 day at the dish, with three RBI, a walk and a
run scored. Brown continued her great weekend by reaching
base in all four of her plate appearances. She went 2-for-2
with a pair of walks and had two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen
base. Pacheco went 2-for-4 with an RBI-double, two runs
scored and a stolen base. Canida hit a two-run single and
scored a run and Carrasco drove in and scored a run. Laura
Duarte '10 and Colleen Mundy '11 each finished with an RBI and a
run scored. Ovieda got the start on the mound and improved
her record to 2-0 by allowing just one run on three hits in five
innings. She also struck out five batters. She helped
her own cause on offense with an RBI-single and a run
scored.
The Poets get back into conference play on March 8, when they
travel to Pomona-Pitzer. The SCIAC doubleheader begins at
Palmer Softball Stadium at 12:00pm
