Whittier softball resumed its SCIAC schedule with doubleheaders
against Pomona-Pitzer on March 8 and California Lutheran on March
9. The Poets split at Pomona, winning game one 6-3 and losing
9-2 in the second game. The next day, Cal Lutheran took game
one at Palmer Stadium 7-2, but bounced back with a 5-2 victory in
the nightcap. The Poets are now 9-7 overall and 3-3 in
conference play.
In game one against Pomona, the Poets used a four-run fourth inning
to take they victory. Five of their 14 hits came in that
inning, including an RBI-double from Dyan Acevedo '08 and
RBI-singles from Mary Pacheco '10 and Nicole Acevedo '09.
Heather Dady '11 pitched a complete game in the win, allowing three
runs on seven hits.
Sheryl Fukuda '08 led the way offensively, going 2-for-3 at the
plate with two RBI and a run scored. Nicole Acevedo was
3-for-4 with an RBI and Dyan Acevedo was 2-for-3 with a pair of
doubles, an RBI and a run scored. Kellie Canida '11 went
2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.
The offense struggled in game two, providing multiple hits in just
the third inning and the only two runs they would score in
the game. Already with a 3-2 lead, Pomona put the game away
with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Deena
Arenas '08 was credited with the loss.
Molly Yriate '11 and Canida were the only Poets with multiple hits
as Yriate went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Canida went 2-for-2.
Whittier's hitting woes continued in game one of the Cal Lutheran
doubleheader. They scored just two runs on five hits, both
runs coming in the bottom of the seventh with the score already 7-0
in favor of the Regals. Dady was the losing pitcher in the
game.
Amanda Brown '09 was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Nicole Acevedo
finished with an RBI-double and a run scored.
Vicky Ovieda '09 shut down the Cal Lutheran offense in the second
game. She allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out
two batters to earn the complete game win. The Poets were up
1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth when Nicole Acevedo led
off the inning with a solo shot over the left field fence.
Later that inning, Ovieda and Yriate had back-to-back hits that
each drove in runs. Cal Lutheran cut the Poet lead in half
with two runs in the top of the sixth. The Poets tacked on
one more in the bottom half of the inning to seal the victory.
Ovieda went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run
scored. Nicole Acevedo was also 2-for-3 in the game with the
home run, her first of the season. Fukuda was 1-for-1 with a
pair of walks, an RBI and two runs scored.
The Poets travel to conference-leading University of Redlands on
March 15 for another SCIAC doubleheader. Game one is
scheduled to begin at 12:00pm.
