Whittier College baseball took on SCIAC rival University of
Redlands in a three-game series on April 19 and 20. The Poets
lost 14-9 at home in the series opener, followed by a pair of
losses in the day two doubleheader, both coming in the final
at-bat.
In game one of the series, the teams combined for 36 hits and 23
runs. Redlands jumped out to an early lead with a six-run
second inning, but the Poets fought back to take the lead with two
runs in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth.
Heading into the ninth inning, the score was 10-9 in favor of the
Bulldogs, who put up four runs in the top half of the ninth to seal
the victory.
Anthony Cappelletti '09 led Whittier at the plate, going 2-for-3
with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Martin '08 also drove
in a pair of runs with a double in the fourth inning. Ryan
Crawford '11 went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
John Fugazi '09 went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs
scored. Brian Carmona '10 had a pair of doubles, an RBI and a
run scored. Lorenzo Lopez '09 tripled, hit an RBI double and
scored a run. Chuck Acker '08 and Luke Moedritzer '09 each
had RBI-singles.
Thomas Phelps '09 got the start on the mound and pitched 4.2
innings in the loss. All of the Redlands runs scored in the
game were earned.
The Poets traveled to Redlands for the final two games. They
lost game one 3-2 thanks to a walk-off, RBI single. Whittier
took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but Redlands answered back
with a run in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to
take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the ninth, Crawford singled in
Martin to tie the game. But after a lead-off single and a
pair of walks, Redlands' Kyle Rizzo drove in the game-winner with a
single in the bottom of the ninth.
Martin was 2-for-4 in the game with a double and two runs
scored. Crawford and Mike Benavente '09 each had
RBI-singles.
Justin Armijo '09 was credited with the loss despite pitching eight
strong innings and allowing three runs on eight hits. He
didn't walk a batter in the game.
The Poets lost 8-7 in ten innings in the final game of the
series. The score was tied at seven heading into the bottom
of the ninth, when the Bulldogs got a lead -off triple followed by
a pair of intentional walks. The fifth batter of the inning
walked as well, bringing home the final run.
Only Fugazi and Acker had multiple hits in the game for the
Poets. Patrick Martin '10 drove in a pair of runs with a
double in the sixth inning. He also scored a run.
Cappelletti and Anthony Tsui '11 each finished with an RBI and a
run scored. Lopez also had an RBI.
Marty Bueno '09 got the start, and went four innings. Kevin
Pigott '09 came on in relief to allow two earned runs in 4.2
innings. Carmona was credited with the loss after entering
the game in the ninth inning.
The Poets have two more series left starting with a three-game set
against Occidental College on April 25 and 26. The Poets host
the Tigers for game one, followed by a doubleheader in Eagle Rock,
Calif., the next day. Game one from Memorial Field is
scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
