Baseball Loses Two in Final At-Bat, Swept by Redlands

Whittier College baseball took on SCIAC rival University of Redlands in a three-game series on April 19 and 20.  The Poets lost 14-9 at home in the series opener, followed by a pair of losses in the day two doubleheader, both coming in the final at-bat.

In game one of the series, the teams combined for 36 hits and 23 runs.  Redlands jumped out to an early lead with a six-run second inning, but the Poets fought back to take the lead with two runs in the second, one in the third and four in the fourth.  Heading into the ninth inning, the score was 10-9 in favor of the Bulldogs, who put up four runs in the top half of the ninth to seal the victory.

Anthony Cappelletti '09 led Whittier at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Ryan Martin '08 also drove in a pair of runs with a double in the fourth inning.  Ryan Crawford '11 went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.  John Fugazi '09 went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI and two runs scored.  Brian Carmona '10 had a pair of doubles, an RBI and a run scored.  Lorenzo Lopez '09 tripled, hit an RBI double and scored a run.  Chuck Acker '08 and Luke Moedritzer '09 each had RBI-singles.

The Poets traveled to Redlands for the final two games.  They lost game one 3-2 thanks to a walk-off, RBI single.  Whittier took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but Redlands answered back with a run in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead.  In the top of the ninth, Crawford singled in Martin to tie the game.  But after a lead-off single and a pair of walks, Redlands' Kyle Rizzo drove in the game-winner with a single in the bottom of the ninth.

Martin was 2-for-4 in the game with a double and two runs scored.  Crawford and Mike Benavente '09 each had RBI-singles.

Justin Armijo '09 was credited with the loss despite pitching eight strong innings and allowing three runs on eight hits.  He didn't walk a batter in the game.

The Poets lost 8-7 in ten innings in the final game of the series.  The score was tied at seven heading into the bottom of the ninth, when the Bulldogs got a lead -off triple followed by a pair of intentional walks.  The fifth batter of the inning walked as well, bringing home the final run.

Only Fugazi and Acker had multiple hits in the game for the Poets.  Patrick Martin '10 drove in a pair of runs with a double in the sixth inning.  He also scored a run.  Cappelletti and Anthony Tsui '11 each finished with an RBI and a run scored.  Lopez also had an RBI.

Marty Bueno '09 got the start, and went four innings.  Kevin Pigott '09 came on in relief to allow two earned runs in 4.2 innings.  Carmona was credited with the loss after entering the game in the ninth inning.

The Poets have two more series left starting with a three-game set against Occidental College on April 25 and 26.  The Poets host the Tigers for game one, followed by a doubleheader in Eagle Rock, Calif., the next day.  Game one from Memorial Field is scheduled to begin at 3:00pm.
