The Poets Men's Basketball Team has forged their way into a tie
for first place in the SCIAC Conference by rolling through the
University of Redland Bulldogs 92-61 in front of a raucous crowd at
the Graham Athletic Center and going 2-0 to start conference
play. The Poets have now won six in a row and continue their
dominance both on the offensive and defensive sides of the
ball.
The Poets are showing that they are a top competitor to win the
SCIAC Title and with their dominant play on the boards and their
hot shooting, the Poets are definitely turning some heads.
The Poets came out hot from the tip shooting a stellar 62% from
the field on 24-39 shooting, while the Bulldogs struggled to find
the basket shooting 39% on 8-23 shooting. The Poets got
tremendous play from Senior Travis Crow who came off the bench to
score 22 points to go along with 3 steals. The Poets took
advantage with their height scoring 24 points in the paint and
converting 24 points off 20 Bulldog turnovers allowing themselves
to take a 61-26 lead into the break, which is one of the biggest
first-half scoring spurts ever in Whittier College History.
Travis Crow got help though from his fellow teammates getting
double-digit scoring efforts from Marcus Gibson (13 pts.), Keegan
Hoover (11 pts./10 boards), Jonathan Saucedo (10 pts./5 boards/6
assists), and DaMon Perry (12 pts./5 boards).
The Bulldogs despite out-shooting the Poets in the second half
35-31, the Poets were still able to seal the win winning
convincingly 92-61. The Bulldogs gained a game-high 25 points
from Dan Selway who shot 54% from the field on 7-13 shooting.
The Poets now run their record to (8-5, SCIAC 2-0) and are in
action tomorrow night January 16, 2009 at CalTech with tip-off
being at 7:30pm.
