Timely foul shooting lifts Poets over Regals

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's basketball team surpassed its win total from a year ago as the Poets picked up their 13th win of the season, a 64-54 win over Cal Lutheran, Saturday night at the Graham Athletics Center.

Whittier (13-6, 5-3 SCIAC) connected on 7-of-10 foul shots in the final 1:22 to help secure the 10-point win.

The Regals (5-14, 3-5 SCIAC) cut what was a 16-point Poet advantage to just four points with 1:22 to play in the game before Whittier was able to clinch the game from the charity stripe.

WC was led offensively by the trio of Morgan Sabala, Brittany Aranda and Kourtney Zilbert who all scored in double figures. Sabala led the team with 13 points in 25 minutes of action.

Zilbert was one rebound shy of the double-double as she finished with 10 points and nine rebounds. Aranda added 10 of her own points which includes a 2-for-2 effort from behind the three-point line.

The Poets opened up as large as a 14-point lead (20-6) midway through the first half but Cal Lutheran closed the gap over the final eight minutes of the half.

Whittier went into intermission with a 33-26 lead.

The Purple and Gold shot 36 percent from the field (19-of-53) but held Cal Lutheran to just 28 percent shooting (16-of-58).

The Poets return to action on Thursday, February 5, at 7:30 p.m. as they face La Verne in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game in La Verne, Calif.
