Whittier scores late in regulation, earns tie with UR

REDLANDS - DJ Covarrubias found Edward Baker with 10 seconds remaining in the second half to tie the game and send it to overtime as the Whittier College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with the University of Redlands on Saturday morning.

The Poets (5-4-2, 4-2-2 SCIAC) and Bulldogs played a scoreless game through the first 86:15 but Redlands scored the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute on a Jeff Willey to Nick Gundersen feed.

WC tied the game on Baker's goal at the 89:50 mark.

Statistically the Bulldogs got off 32 shots to Whittier's 16 but UR only put seven on goal. The Poets had five shots on goal for the game.

Michael Reed played all 110:00 of the game and came away with six saves which includes three in overtime.

With the win the Poets remain in third place, in front of Redlands and a half game back of second place Claremont-M-S.

WC was whistled twice for being offsides (both in the second half) and Redlands was called for offsides once.

Whittier returns to action Wednesday, October 14, as they face first place Pomona-Pitzer at 4 pm in Claremont, Calif.
