WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College men's
soccer team needed just 1:21 of extra time to put away the
University of La Verne as the Poets beat the Leopards, 2-1, in
overtime on Saturday morning at the Graham Soccer Field.
Whittier (6-4-2, 5-2-2 SCIAC) has now run its unbeaten streak to
six consecutive matches; the longest such streak in over a decade.
Srdan Jovanovic tallied his sixth and seventh
goals of the season with latter coming at the 91:21 mark to give
the purple and gold its second win in four overtime games this
year. The Poets are 2-0-2 in overtimes and Jovanovic provided the
game-winner in each contest.
The Poets' first goal came just 5:08 into the second half.
Adolfo Santos found a streaking Jovanovic who
played the ball to the far post and gave WC a 1-0 lead at the 50:08
mark.
The purple and gold held the Leopards (3-11, 3-7 SCIAC)
scoreless for over 89 minutes but a goal with a mere 40 seconds
remaining from Taylor Hart send the game to overtime.
Whittier needed just one shot in the first overtime to earn its
sixth win of the season.
Jovanovic led the game with eight shot which includes four on
goal. As a team the Poets had 18 shots for the game. La Verne
finished the game with 14 shots (6 on goal). Each team had five
corner kicks.
Starting keeper Michael Read made five saves in
the win.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, October 21, as they
host Cal Lutheran, under the lights, at 7 pm.
