WHITTIER, Calif. - The No. 3 Whittier College
men's water polo team recorded a season-high 20 goals on Wednesday
afternoon as it rolled to a nine-goal win over the University of La
Verne in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
game.
The Poets (10-9, 2-0 SCIAC) had 12 different goal scorers which
includes five players that recorded multi-goal games.
Rilesh Desai, Jordan Van
Norman and Alex Perry all had a hat trick
while Brandon Babot and We
Paulson chipped in with two goals apiece. Desai added
three assists and drew three ejections.
Whittier stormed out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first
quarter and led 9-6 at halftime. The Poets put the game out of
reach in the third quarter as they outscored the Leopards 7-0. WC
added four goals in the final frame en route to the 20-11 win.
All-American goalie Casey Regehr made 22 saves
which includes six saves in each the first, third and fourth
quarters. His most impressive save came in the first quarter on a
five-meter shot.
Will Jackson notched a game-high five assists
and had a team-high two steals.
On a wild play in the fourth, Regehr was ejected which left an
on open goal in a man-up situation for La Verne. The Leopards got
off a shot from five-meters but John Adams slid to
the cage and recorded the block.
Regehr returned to the cage on the ensuing possession and made
three saves on consecutive shots from inside five meters.
The Poets scored four goals in the final quarter.
Whittier returns to action on Saturday, October 24, as it plays
host to No. 1 Redlands at 11 am.
