RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Four players reached double
figures and Damon Perry recorded his second
double-double in as many tries as the Whittier College men's
basketball team rolled to a 95-66 win over La Sierra University on
Monday evening.
Perry finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Drew
Menez notched a game-high 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting,
AJ Manalo scored 16 points and David
Hayashi poured in 18 points which includes a game-high
three three-pointers to lead the Poets' attack.
La Sierra scored the first bucket of the game and led for 27
seconds before Menez knocked home his first points of the game to
tie the game at 2-2. On the ensuing Eagles' possession Manalo
forced a turnover which turned into a Whittier lead it would not
relinquish.
The Poets (2-0) shot 51 percent from the field in the first half
and connected on 5-of-10 three-pointers in building a 26-point,
50-24, halftime advantage.
WC remained hot from the field in the second half to the tune of
52 percent shooting. Whittier made 16-of-20 second half foul shots
and outrebounded La Sierra for the game 43-25.
Josh Deanne grabbed a game-high 14
boards.
For the game the Poets scored 29 points off of turnovers and
tallied 46 points in the paint.
Whittier returns to action on Friday, November 27, as it hosts
Fontbonne University at 7:30 pm in the Poets' 2009-10 home opener.
