THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Amanda Webster tossed
her second no-hitter of her young college career but it wasn't
enough as the Whittier College softball team lost to Cal Lutheran,
1-0, in Game 1 of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference doubleheader at Hutton Field. The Poets lost Game 2,
2-1, in eight innings.
Whittier (4-4, 0-2 SCIAC) collected seven hits in the first game
but couldn't manage to get one run across the plate. Mary
Pacheco went 3-for-4 to lead the purple and gold
offensively.
Webster (2-3) struck out five batters and only allowed one run.
The unearned run came in the first inning after Webster walked the
lead off batter. The next batter attempted a sacrifice but the
Poets misplayed the bunt and allowed a run to score from first base
on the error.
In Game 2 Heather Dady (1-1) went the distance
for the Poets as she tossed 7.1 innings, allowed five hits, two
runs (two earned) and stuck out four batters.
The Poets scored their lone run of the twin bill in the sixth
inning after Brenda Thompson hit an RBI single to
score Colleen Mundy from second base. Mundy pinch
ran for Molly Yriarte who had a two-out double to
spark the Whittier offense.
Cal Lutheran (6-0, 4-0 SCIAC) answered with a run of its own in
the bottom of the sixth and scored the game winning run in the
eighth inning.
The Poets return to action tomorrow, February 22, as they host
La Verne in a game that was originally scheduled for February 14.
The first pitch is scheduled for Noon.
