LA VERNE, Calif. - The
Whittier College men's basketball team completed the regular season
sweep of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
foe University of La Verne as the Poets defeated the Leopards,
70-53, Wednesday night.
The Poets (12-7, 6-2 SCIAC) remain in a two-way tie for second
place in the SCIAC as they share an identical conference mark with
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. WC hosts the Stags on February 21 in their
second game of the regular season series.
Senior Travis Crow was nearly perfect on the
night as he was 7-for-7 from the field (4-for-4 from three-point
range) for a game-high 19 points. Crow's lone miss came on the back
end of a pair of free throws late in the first half. He finished
the night 1-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Fellow senior Michael Archuletta matched Crow's
game-high as he tallied his own 19 points. He also added eight
rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
Whittier led by as many as 15 points in the first half and took
a 14-point, 37-23, lead into the intermission.
Senior Jeff McClean scored 10 points and had a
game-high five steals on the evening. The University of La Verne
(5-14, 1-7 SCIAC) had 15 turnovers; 11 of those were steals by the
Poets.
WC built as large as a 24-point second half lead en route to the
17-point win.
As a team the Poets shot 49 percent from the field which
includes 43 percent shooting from behind the arc.
Whittier College returns to action on Saturday, February 7, as
they travel to Redlands, Calif., to face the University of Redlands
in SCIAC tilt. The game is set for a 7:30 pm start.
