WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
baseball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning
and starting pitcher Ryan Schwenn went 6.1 innings
as the Poets beat the University of Redlands, 7-3, Friday afternoon
at Memorial Field.
Schwenn allowed three runs on six hits and struck out three to
earn his second win of the year. Kevin Pigott came
in relief of Schwenn to earn the save.
The Poets (10-12) scored runs in the first and second inning
before they opened the gap with a four-run sixth.
Reed Tuttle led off the game with a double and
scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by Anthony
Cappelletti.
John Fugazi had a two-out double in the second
and was brought home on an RBI single by Pete
Mitchell to put WC up 2-0 after two.
Cappelletti and Austin Straus hit back-to-back
homeruns in the sixth and Taylor Fallon singled in
Luke Moedritzer to make the score 6-0 after six.
Cappelletti's homerun was his sixth of the year while it was
Straus' second round-tripper.
Redlands (13-5) cut the lead in half with a three-run seventh
inning but the purple and gold added one more insurance run in its
half of the seventh en route to the four-run win.
Mitchell finished with two hits while Cappelletti drove in three
runs.
The Poets return to action tomorrow, March 21, as they face
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and La Verne in a pair of non-conference
games on the road. WC and CMS are scheduled for an 11 a.m. start
and ULV and WC are set for a 3 p.m. start.
