LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whittier College
baseball team lost its second consecutive game, first Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest, to the
University of La Verne, 14-5, on Friday afternoon at Ben Hines
Field.
The Poets (10-15, 4-3 SCIAC) were led offensively by
Anthony Cappelletti who extended his hitting
streak to 13 games with a 2-for-4 performance. The senior left
fielder drove in one run and also scored in the loss.
Whittier grabbed an early lead in the top of the first inning as
Reed Tuttle hit a lead-off triple and scored
during the same play on an error/
The purple and gold's lead was short lived as La Verne (11-10,
1-6 SCIAC) scored three runs in its half of the first inning and
tacked on four more in the second inning to take a 7-1 lead through
three innings.
The Poets were able to cut the lead to 10-5 through seven and a
half innings but the Leopards put an end to any thought of a WC
comeback with a four-run eighth inning.
WC managed only nine hits as Ryan Crawford and
Lorenzo Lopez joined Cappelletti with two hits.
The Poets continue their three-game series with La Verne
tomorrow, March 28, as they host a double-header at Memorial Field.
The first game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
