LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whittier College men's
soccer team allowed just one goal but that proved to be the
difference as the University of La Verne held off the Poets, 1-0,
on Wednesday afternoon in a Southern California Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference match.
The Poets (2-4, 1-2 SCIAC) got off 15 shots to La Verne's 13 but
came up empty on the scoreboard. Srdan Jovanovic
and Sam Russell put two shots apiece on goal.
Whittier held the advantage statistically which includes a 5-2
effort on corner kicks. The purple and gold earned three of its
five corners in the second half.
Taylor Ayres started in goal and played over 80
minutes. He made saves on four of the five shots on goal from La
Verne.
Michael Read relieved Ayres in the 81st minute
and played the rest of the game in goal. It was the first action in
net for Read since he left early in the second quarter in
Whittier's 2-1, overtime, win over Redlands on September 16.
La Verne's (2-5, 2-1 SCIAC) game-winner came at the 70:36 mark
from Nahavi Mendoza.
Whittier returns to action on Saturday, September 26, as they
travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to face Cal Lutheran at 11 am.
