Poets swallow tough one to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whittier College men's soccer team allowed just one goal but that proved to be the difference as the University of La Verne held off the Poets, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.

The Poets (2-4, 1-2 SCIAC) got off 15 shots to La Verne's 13 but came up empty on the scoreboard. Srdan Jovanovic and Sam Russell put two shots apiece on goal.

Whittier held the advantage statistically which includes a 5-2 effort on corner kicks. The purple and gold earned three of its five corners in the second half.

Taylor Ayres started in goal and played over 80 minutes. He made saves on four of the five shots on goal from La Verne.

Michael Read relieved Ayres in the 81st minute and played the rest of the game in goal. It was the first action in net for Read since he left early in the second quarter in Whittier's 2-1, overtime, win over Redlands on September 16.

La Verne's (2-5, 2-1 SCIAC) game-winner came at the 70:36 mark from Nahavi Mendoza.

Whittier returns to action on Saturday, September 26, as they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif., to face Cal Lutheran at 11 am.
