SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Whittier College
men's water polo went 0-2 on its first day at the Bronco Tournament
hosted by Santa Clara University at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The Poets lost 14-11 to Redlands in a non-conference game to start
the day and dropped a 13-5 decision to No. 10 Santa Clara in the
second game of the day.
Whittier (4-6) allowed eight goals in the second quarter to
Redlands which proved to be the difference. The Poets outscored the
Bulldogs, 8-6, in the other three quarters combined.
Rilesh Desai led the Poets
with four goals, two drawn ejections and one steal. Alex
Perry added three goals and Brandon Babot
notched a pair of scores.
Ryan Rock and All-American Casey
Regehr split time in the cage. Rock made four saves in the
first half and dished out one assist and Regehr finished with four
saves in the second half.
Will Jackson and Lincoln Haley
each led the team with two assists.
In the second game of the day the Poets got down early and
couldn't recover. Santa Clara led 5-1 after the first quarter and
outscored the purple and gold, 6-1, in the second and third
quarters to hold an 11-2 advantage after three.
Whittier outscored SCU, 3-2 in the final frame.
Desai, Perry, Haley, Chet Schuster and
Robert Nihei all recorded goals for WC.
The Poets continue play at the Bronco Tournament tomorrow,
September 27, as they face Cal Lutheran and UC Davis at 8 am and 12
pm.
