WHITTIER, Calif. – In a match that saw a
combined 222 attacks and 68 kills, Occidental withstood a strong
second game by the Poets to earn the 3-0 win over the Whittier
College volleyball team on Friday evening at the Graham Athletics
Center.
Whittier's second game was its strongest as it had 12
kills and only three errors on 40 total attacks. As a team the
purple and gold had an attacking percentage of .225.
The Poets (1-12, 0-4 SCIAC) had their backs to the wall but
turned a 24-21, second game, deficit into a 24-24 tie behind a
Lindsey Kish kill and Alayna Rigo
ace.
Kish finished the match with a team-high 10 kills on 34 attempts
while Rigo had two of the Whittier's five aces.
Despite the comeback effort, the Tigers had back-to-back kills
to end the game and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Whittier had six players record at least one kill. Rigo added
seven on the evening while Courtney Dickerson had
six. Vanessa Amran dished out a team-high 22
assists and had an ace in the loss.
Rigo filled her stat line with a team-high 21 digs. Kish and
Alyssa Acosta each reached double-digits in digs
with 10 and 13, respectively.
The Poets had 10 block assists for a total of 5.0 team blocks.
Shannon Orlins was involved in three blocks and
Amran and Dickerson had their hands in two each.
Whittier has a short turnaround as it travels to Redlands,
Calif., tomorrow afternoon to face Redlands at 2 pm.
