LA VERNE, Calif. – Adolfo Santos recorded
four points on a goal and two assists as he helped the Whittier
College men's soccer team end its three-game losing streak
with a 3-1 win over La Verne on Saturday afternoon.
The Poets (7-5-1, 5-3-1 SCIAC) did wait long into the start of
the second half to break a scoreless tie as Santos kicked started
the scoring at 47:53. The junior forward dribbled past the goalie
and played the ball into the open net.
Santos was at it against a mere five minutes later finding
Jonathan Palomino in the box in the 53rd minute.
The goal was Palomino's third of the season.
The Leopards cut their deficit in half at 59:03 after Angel De
Alba found the back of the net on a direct kick but the Santos
recorded his second assist in the 80th minute to put the game out
of reach for La Verne.
Sam Russell was the lucky forward at the end of
Santos' cross in the box as he headed home the insurance
strike.
Whittier was outshot 17-15 but both teams logged eight shots on
goal. Santos and Srdan Jovanovic eqach had two
shots on frame while Rafa Serfaty, Palomino,
Thomas Barber and Russell all had one.
David Diaz made seven saves in the win.
The Poets will open a three-game week on Monday against
Occidental. Whittier will travel to Pasadena to take on Caltech on
Wednesday, October 20, before returning home to host the Tigers on
Saturday, October 23, at 1 pm.
