WHITTIER, Calif. – Francis
Maxwell scored two goals to lead the Whittier College
men's soccer team to a come-from-behind win over Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Cal Lutheran on
Saturday afternoon at the Graham Soccer Field.
The goals
were the first two of the season for the Glascow, Scotland, native
and helped erase a 1-0 early deficit.
Maxwell's
first strike came in the 35th minute of an assist from Ian
Cromwell. The freshman added the eventual game winner
at the 70:45 mark on a feed from Adolfo
Santos.
Whittier
outshot Cal Lutheran 24-11 for the game and had nine shots on goal
to the Kingsmen's four. WC keeper David
Diaz made three saves in the win.
The
opening goal of the contest came at 11:16 off a corner kick for Cal
Lutheran.
With the
win the Poets improve to 6-2-1 on the year which includes a 4-0-1
record in SCIAC play. The Kingsmen fall to 1-7-1, 1-5 SCIAC, on the
season.
WC returns
to action on Wednesday, October 6, for a key matchup against
Redlands.
