WHITTIER, Calif. – Jonathan Palomino
provided the game winner with a 1:30 left in the first overtime as
the Whittier College men's soccer team outlasted Occidental
College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Graham Soccer Field.
With the win, Whittier improves to 7-4-1 in conference play.
The game winning goal started from the feet of Adolfo
Santos who held possession five yards off the midfield
stripe. Santos played an ambitious ball to Palomino who was
streaking between three Occidental defenders.
The ball took two hops and found the feet of Palomino who lofted
the ball over keeper Ian Powell for his fourth goal of the
season.
Statistically, the Poets controlled the game outshooting the
Tigers 23-7 for the afternoon. Whittier won 11 corners while
Occidental had one.
David Diaz wasn't tested much but made
three saves in the win.
Whittier had an opportunity at the end of regulation to win the
game but Sam Russell's shot bounced off the
crossbar to force overtime.
The Poets return to action on Wednesday, October 27, as they
travel to Thousand Oaks to take on Cal Lutheran at 4 pm.
