WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College
volleyball team went 1-1 this past weekend as it hosted Bates
College and the University of La Verne on Saturday. The Poets
defeated Bates 3-0 but lost to the Leopards, 3-0, in SCIAC
action.
The first match of the day saw Whittier (6-20, 1-10 SCIAC) roll
to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 win. Courtney Dickerson
attacked at a .333 percentage with 10 kills on 21 attempts. She had
just three errors for the match.
Shannon Orlins added a match-high 11 kills on
29 attempts while the duo of Vanessa Amran and
Ashley Terich combined for 23 of the team's
31 assists.
Alyssa Acosta had 12 digs as the team had seven
players with at least four digs.
Alayna Rigo continued her solid freshman
campaign with three aces. Nicole Boyer and Orlins
had a pair of aces in the win.
As a team the Poets finished with a .206 attacking percentage.
Whittier totaled 14 kills in Game 1, 12 kills in Game 2 and 13
kills in Game 3.
In the night cap of the twin bill, La Verne rallied after being
pushed in the first game to close out the Poets. ULV hung on for
the 28-26 win and then rolled to a 25-13 and 25-16 win to complete
the sweep.
Rigo had 12 kills on 25 attempts with just three errors. Boyer
had nine kills and Orlins chipped in with eight.
Amran had 19 assists and a match-high four aces.
The Poets return to action on Tuesday evening with a 7:30 pm
road match against Caltech.
