CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Whittier College
baseball team lost its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference opener at Alumni Field on Friday afternoon, 13-3.
Despite holding No. 10 Pomona-Pitzer to five runs through the first
four innings, the Sagehens exploded for nine runs over the next
four frames en route to the 10-run win.
Whittier (1-7, 0-1 SCIAC) did not go without a fight.
Reed Tuttle started the 4th inning rally with a
base hit and latter advaned to third after Darby
Weppner reached on Pomona-Pitzer's lone error. Tuttle
scored a batter later on a Jacob Storre RBI at
bat.
Weppner scored the second run of the inning after an RBI single
by Andrew Vallejo.
The Poets did not score for the next four innings but had back
to back singles to lead off the sixth inning by Tuttle and
Austin Straus, respectively. Each hit was the
second of the day for Tuttle and Straus.
Whittier was able to push one more across the plate in the top
of the ninth inning on a Weppner solo homerun.
Taylor Fallon made his first collegiate start
on the mound and went four innings. He allowed four runs (three
earned) in four innings of work with five strikeouts. The loss
drops Fallon to 0-2 on the season.
The Poets will finish the series against Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow
with a double header in their SCAIC home opener at 11 am and 2 pm.
