WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
softball team belted five homeruns and totaled 22 runs and
Jessica Rosnack threw a perfect game in the second
game of the day as the Poets earned a sweep of SCIAC rival
Occidental on Saturday afternoon.
Rosnack faced 18 batters and sat them down in succession.
She struck out seven and improved to 2-0 in her two starts, with
two complete games and a 3.18 ERA.
The freshman hurler was aided by eight hits which includes a
three-run, walk-off, homerun by Mary Pacheco in
the bottom half of the sixth inning. Pacheco went 2-for-3 and
drove in three runs in the 9-0, Game 2, win.
Amanda Carrasco was perfect at the plate in the
night cap of the twin bill as she went 2-for-2 with solo homerun.
Jennifer Luders added a deep shot with a two-run
blast in the fourth.
In the first game of the afternoon the Poets gave up two runs in
Occidental's (2-6, 0-4 SCIAC) opening at bat. However, the Tiger
lead was short lived. Whittier (4-1, 2-0 SCIAC) scored three runs
in the home half of the first and scored a combined 10 runs over
the next two innings.
In the seven-run third inning the first three Poets reached base
and Kellie Canida drove them all home with a grand
slam. Brenda Thompson and Pacheco hit back-to-back
doubles and Janae Townsend hit a two-run shot to
give WC a 13-2 lead.
The Tiger's tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth inning but it
wasn't enough in preventing Heather Dady from
earning her first win of the season.
The turnaround for the Poets is short as they host La Sierra
tomorrow afternoon at Palmer Field. The first pitch of Game 1 is
schedule for 12 pm.
