WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College
baseball team put together five hits and scored only two runs as an
11-run explosion by La Verne over four innings proved too much for
the Poets to overcome in a 13-2 loss to the Leopards on Friday
afternoon.
The Poets (1-10, 0-4 SCIAC) used a total of four pitchers and
combined to allow 11 earned runs on 17 hits. Casey
Serna started and lasted 3.0 innings. He gave up six runs
(five earned) on seven hits with four walks a pair of strike outs.
Tyler Bogart threw 3.0 innings of no-hit ball
in a relief effort but allowed four walks.
Darby Weppner led the offensive attack for WC
with a two-hit afternoon. He hit an RBI-double in the home half of
the fourth to plate the Poets' first run of the game and he added
his second two-bagger in the bottom of the ninth.
Chris Hylland produced the second run of the
game for the purple and gold in the ninth on a sacrifice fly to
score Ian Bablewski.
ULV (4-5, 2-2 SCIAC) scored two runs in each the second and
third innings and added seven runs combined in the fourth and fifth
innings in the win.
La Verne's starting pitcher Matt Baudino scattered three hits
over 7.0 innings. The Poets got to Baudino for one run.
Whittier and La Verne resume its series tomorrow afternoon with
a double header at La Verne. First pitch of Game 1 is schedule for
11 am.
