WHITTIER, Calif. - After two postponements due
to inclement weather the Whittier College baseball team and Chapman
University were finally able to open their three-game series. The
No. 4 Panthers used an offensive explosion to earn the doubleheader
sweep of the purple and gold with a 14-1 and 11-1 victory.
The Poets' bats were held in check all afternoon and the WC
pitching staff had troubling containing the aluminum of the
Panthers. Whittier was held to just 10 hits in the two games while
Chapman totaled 38.
Freshman Jake Storrer was a bright spot for
Whittier as he went 4-for-8 with a double in his debut in the
purple and gold. His efforts were highlighted by a 3-for-4 outing
in Game 2.
Whittier's starting pitchers surrendered 15 runs in 5.2 innings
and both suffered the loss in their first starts of the year.
Ryan Schwenn lasted 3.1 innings and allowed
nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits in the first game. He was
doomed by a third including that included a grand slam.
Austin Nogueira got the nod in Game 2 and gave
up six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.
The Poets used eight pitchers in the two games and got solid
efforts from Mike Rueda and Tyler
Bogart. Rueda and Bogart closed out the second game with
four scoreless innings. The Panthers were held to just six hits
over the final 12 outs.
The Poets and Panthers will conclude their series tomorrow
evening at Chapman.
