ORANGE, Calif. - The Whittier College baseball team held a 3-2 lead through three innings on Monday afternoon against No. 4 Chapman but surrendered 13 runs over the next six innings to drop its third-straight game of the season, 15-3.

The Poets (0-3) got off to a hot start with a triple by freshman Jake Storrer to lead off the game. He scored one batter later as Reed Tuttle picked up his first RBI of the season.

Whittier put two more runs on the board in the top half of the third on three hits. Ben Cohon reached safely on an infield hit and advanced to second with his first stolen base of the season.

Tuttle picked up his second RBI in as many at bats with an RBI single to bring home Cohon and Austin Straus ended the third inning rally with a single that scored Tuttle.

Chapman (3-0) scored a run apiece in the first and third innings and took the lead for good with a four-run fourth.

The Panthers chased starting pitcher Kevin Pigott after 3.2 innings of work. Pigott allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits with one strikeout. Andrew Pigott relieved his brother and recorded the final out of the fourth inning.

A. Pigott pitched a perfect fifth inning and allowed just one run in the sixth frame. He finished his afternoon after 2.1 innings. The sophomore struckout two batters and scattered three hits.

The Panthers extended their lead and put the game away with a eight runs over the final two innings.

Whittier's bats were held in check over the final 18 outs. They managed just two hits after they recorded four in the first three innings.

The top of the lineup for the Poets (Storrer, Tuttle and Cory Goodchild) collected four hits, scored two runs, drew two walks and drove in a pair of runs.

Whittier returns to action on Thursday, February 11, at the Arizona Desert Classic. The Poets will face Whitman at 2 pm.
