WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second time in
as many days the Whittier College softball team rebounded after a
disappointing Game 1 loss to earn the double header split. The
Poets hit three homeruns in the second game which includes a walk
off two-run shot from Amanda Carrasco to down the
Sagehens in five innings, 9-0.
In the first game Pomona-Pitzer scored in five of the seven
innings and got out of a pair of bases loaded jams in the first and
second innings to pick up the 10-3 win.
Carrasco's walk off homerun scored Janae
Townsend which pushed Whittier's run total past the
mercy rule limit.
The fifth inning was started on an infield single by
Brenda Thompson and it featured a pair of two-run
homeruns. Mary Pacheco reached third on a
misplayed ball by the right fielder which scored Thompson from
first and Molly Yriarte drove in Pacheco with a
two-run blast to left.
Yriarte finished the second game 2-for-3 with three RBIs and six
total bases. Carrasco had a game-high four RBIs on a 2-for-2 effort
while Pacheco hit her sixth long ball of the year in the bottom of
the first to go along with three runs scored for the game.
Pacheco's first inning blast proved to be the game winner
and was all freshman hurler Jessica Rosnack needed
to secure the win. She went all 5.0 innings and scattered four hits
behind three strikeouts. With the win she is now 4-4 on the season.
The first game started strong for Whittier. Kellie
Canida led off the game with a single and was advanced to
second on a sacrifice bunt by Thompson. Pacheco brought in Canida
with an RBI double and the Poets led 1-0 after one.
However, the lead was short lived. Pomona scored two runs in
each the second, third and fourth innings and led 6-3 at the end of
four.
The Sagehens tacked on one run in the fifth and added three
insurance scores in the seventh en route to the seven-run win.
Jennifer Luders hit an RBI double in the third
inning and Pacheco hit a solo homerun in the fourth to provide the
WC runs.
Luders and Pacheco each finished with a pair of hits while
Canida, Thompson and Cynthia Loza all had one hit.
Heather Dady was tagged with the loss. She went
3.2 innings and allowed six runs (six earned) on nine hits.
Erica Zamora threw 2.1 innings and gave up two
runs on two hits and Rosnack threw the final frame giving up two
runs on two hits.
The Poets return to action next weekend as they take part in the
Tucson Invitational on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. WC's
first game is against Dickinson on March 19 at 1:30 pm.
